More and more it seems like party rock is making a return to the forefront of rock music answering to the call from leagues of fans out there who are tired of all the dark, depressing, and out-right aggressiveness that makes up much of today’s hard rock scene who are ready to have a good time and party.

Coming out of Minneapolis, MN, Flipp formed over ten year’s ago and have gained some mass exposure as winners of MTV’s ‘Unsigned Band Contest’ and opening for such recognizable acts as White Zombie, Cheap Trick, The Ramones, The Misfits, and Everclear. Although the band had released albums previously, it wasn’t until 2001 that Flipp was about to embark on bigger and better things. This is where they met Everclear frontman Art Alexakis who liked the band so much that he signed them to his new label, Popularity Recordings. With the help of Artemis Records, Flipp releases Volume, an album that just spews good time party rock and roll. Produced by Alexakis, Volume unleashes a sound that’s reminiscent of the glam and classic rock eras of bands like KISS, Faster Pussycat and Enuff Z’Nuff, and more modern rockers Lit and Everclear.

The song titles alone should give you an idea of what you’re getting into. Songs like “I Still Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star,” and “Cock Rock” pretty much sums up Flipp’s musical taste and direction. Their first single, “Freak,” and “Cock Rock” both have strong KISS vibes. And in case you had no idea – ‘The cock is a rock and roll machine’ – at least that’s what the lyrics to “Cock Rock” claims. “Hairdo” is another highlight on Volume that sounds like Flipp singer Brynn Arens and Art Alexakis going back and forth on vocal duties and asking to – ‘Roll me up a funny little cigarette.’

The bottom line here is that Flipp is a fun rock band that is a much-needed break from today’s heavy rockers. You want to have fun? You want something to get the party started? You want to chug beer, smoke joints, toss panties on the ceiling fan, puke your guts out, pass out on the neighbor’s front lawn then this is the soundtrack to a great time that you probably won’t remember the next day...that is until your friends fill you in on how your cat ended up glued upside down on the ceiling. It’s a crazy, good time not to be passed up.
