Feelin´ down?……well,I got the cure for you! Put on the album "Volume" by four crazies looking like villains from a Batman movie and you will surely either love ´em or hate their guts. I want you to please welcome FLIPP! If you let these guys into your life nothing will be the same again, there´s so many good vibrations about their kick ass rock´n´roll that it will make your heart pump extra fast , it did the job for me putting a big smile on my face while listening to their music. I just had to check up with the guys what´s behind such a runaway train for a band, totally unstoppable. Well this is what Brynn Arens(singer),Chia Karaoke Arens(Guitars), Freaky Useless(Bass) and Kilo Bale(Drums) had to say!

KR: First of all I want to thank you for the making of the best melodic rock´n´roll album since Cheap Trick´s Heaven tonight in ´78!
BRYNN: Wow,Thanx dude,Cheap Trick fucking rocks….I´m blushing.
FREAKY: Cool man you rock!…What planet are you from?

KR: In this numetal climate it feels refreshing with the 70´s glamslam party kinda rock you´replaying, have the band always sounded like that?
BRYNN: We just play it the way we feel it,Rock and roll comes from the gut and we really do things that way ya know, without thought…this is rocknroll. This is the only way we can sound,it´s not a math equation, you cant produce real rocknroll from your head,it comes from your cock!

KR: The new album "Volume" is produced by Art Alexakis from Everclear which you also toured with the summer of 2001,was it then you came up with the idea of working together?
BRYNN: Yes it was,Art and us are like minds, twisted as they may be. It came very easy, when we started hanging out in the bus or dressing Room with guitars it happened really organically as Kilo would say! Done in the true spirit of rock and roll,we all knew this was the right thing to do because we didn´t have to think about it.

KR: Flipp music seems to be all about having fun, like life´s a big rock show and I read that you stand close to your fans bringing the rockshow home to some of their garage, that is supercool, you really take time off for them!
CHIA: As kids, the garage was the only place our parents(Brynn and I) would let us make the racket we call rocknroll,we used to daydream that the garage was the stadium stage and the drive-way was the main floor. So it was only natural to bring it back there, besides…I always love pissing off the neighbors, even if they aren´t mine!

KR: You made a live cd EP in ´98 released in a cereal box with the cd inside, you always seem to do something extra for the fans!
FREAKY: It´s a lot harder for us to do nothing than it is to do more. We too are fans of rock and roll so what seems to be extra to you is normal to us…….we´re all freaks.

KR: The band supported Cheap Trick on the tour in ´97 and I think lots of stuff in your music reminds of Cheap Trick, are you fans of ´em?
BRYNN: Fuck,if you love rocknroll you gotta be a Cheap Trick fan. They co authored the fucking book!

KR: I read on your website that you started your own local rock show called Teenage Rampage in ´97 where local bands could send in demos and the winners got to play on the same event, are you still putting it on?
CHIA: We´ve done five of them thus far,I think the idea was a good one and it gave a lot of delinquents a good chance to mess up their lives through rocknroll, but Teenage Rampage has run it´s course in Minneapolis. On to something new and improved…..maybe a Teenage Rampage U.S Tour?!….Something like American Idol on crack.

KR: The whole concept about Flipp feels honest and natural, the energy and the attitude can easily be compared to the Sex Pistols classic record Never mind the bullocks,I reckon you´re raised with that album?
BRYNN: Fuck yes,my older brother turned me on to a lot of great shit. He really wanted to keep me clear of "Hair metal" which was big when I was younger and thank god he did. Other wise Flipp could have ended sounding like Warrant or Stryper.

KR: The band played at Woodstock festival ´99 and made quite a success, that must have felt honorable beeing a part of such a classic event?
KILO: Hell yes,Anytime you can mix great rocknroll with killer buds, I´m honored to be part of it.
BRYNN: It´s so fucking cool to hear "Hello you crazy sick fuckers" coming over a PA that size and to see 100 thousand people who didn´t even know us to respond to us so well, aaaah the power of rocknroll!

KR: With your new album just released, will you be touring as a supporting act or do your own tour?
BRYNN: Both,Flipp is really about getting out there and playing it Live so It doesn´t matter to us where or how we play just as long as it´s louder than fuck.

KR: Let´s talk about the songs on "Volume". First track "Clone me" which you also made a video of sounds like a real strong opener of the show, the effect of the live audience screaming "Jump, jump" at the end takes the song to wuthering heights. Is it an opener?
BRYNN: Wow…..you have good ears, yeah it´s our opener. It just has that "Get off your ass it´s party time feel"/beat courtesy of Kilo Bale and a few preshow puffs.

KR: The opening phrase on the 2nd track "Freak" goes -I remember my highschool teacher, she used to say I was a highschool creature! By the way you look it feels it´s the soundtrack of your lives!
BRYNN: It´s true, there were a bunch of loser assholes that used to kick my ass after school everyday, and I still run into some of them from time to time at the drive thru.

KR: In "La de da" the lyrics goes -The 90´s is like the 60´s upside down! Was it the depressive grunge thing you were thinking of?
BRYNN: I just really liked the phrase, when I write lyrics I do what I call ink blotting, which is really writing down whatever comes into my head. Ya know like when a shrink holds up those ink blots and says what is this? And you´re supposed to say the first thing that comes to your head, that´s how I tend to write lyrics.

KR: "Hairdo" is my fave and sounds like a mix between Beastie Boys and Sparks with excellent lyrics,a piece of the solo by Chia Karaoke has some Ace Frehley vibes from the Kiss song "She",was it done like a tribute?
CHIA: If I played a guitarsolo it was an accident and I promise never to Do it again!

KR: One can hear lots of influences from the 70´s in your music like on "I still love rocknroll" where the spirit of Mott the Hoople lies over and usually when bands today sings about rocknroll it feels ridiculous. But with you guys it´s the real thing. I suppose you dont have much good things to say about boybands like Five who made a cover of Queen´s We will rock you?
FREAKY: Those fuckers shouldn´t be able to use the word band.

KR: "Rocknroll star" is a typical track that encourage youngsters to put up a rockband instead of trying to become a plastic product of the major label business,do you see yourselves as the injection this music market needs?
BRYNN: I´m not even sure what the word market means,as far as I know that´s where you buy cereal and shit, once again all I can say is Flipp is going to live or die on the fact that we live and breathe rocknroll and everything else can go fuck it self!

KR: Bands like you and Enuff´z´nuff keep carrying and raising the flag of the rocking 70´s,Donnie Vie and Chip´z´nuff from that band would probably have been proud writing a song like "Zoom". Are there any bands around today that you like?
FREAKY: -Foo fighters
CHIA: -The Hives
BRYNN: -Flipp
KILO: -What was the question?

KR: On "Cxxk rock" you´re beeing a bit provocative singing -You´re cxxk is a rocknroll machine! I guess there´s no chance of that tune ending up on MTV (only with bleeps every other second....*laughter*)?!
BRYNN: To be honest I would love to see Flipp on MTV but chances are It would be bleeps like you said and all fuzzed out.

KR: We who has grown up with Gary Glitter recognize the phrase "Do you wanna be in my gang" in the song "Ohyeah". Have you ever done any covers live?
BRYNN: Yeah just the other night we did "Cat scratch fever",once in a while we´ll do "Cant hardly wait" or "Bastards of young" by The Replacements.
FREAKY: We do a freaked out version of "Let it be" by The Beatles,we do it Really fast.
BRYNN: And of course we do The Who´s "My generation" like it´s on downers.

KR: After Sept.11th last year the track "The whole world´s sick" feels right on spot, but I think that we can´t be too serious neither so it´s great to have your partymusic around. But was there any moment when the band felt like it was wrong continuing entertaining people?
BRYNN: No,Rocknroll is like a cockroach,it´s therapy,it´s getting it all out of your system,I would like to smash those fuckers over the head with my guitar those fucks.

KR: How did you do the sound effect on "Psycho babble" sounding like a blacksmith hammering, was it sampled or done in an old fashioned way with a hammer against steel in the studio?
KILO: Most everything we do organically……(cough)…(cough)

KR: Many of the songs on the new album were recorded on your last record "Blow it out your ass",how come you rerecorded those songs on "Volume"?
KILO: Why not!we´re always trying to make sure all of our songs get The full cock in there rock. "Blow it out your ass" was a regional release and when we got together with Art there were songs on B.I.O.Y.A that we all loved and felt they deserved to see a bigger world.

KR: You´re now under the management of Bill Aucoin who also managed Kiss once,it must be special beeing handled by such a classic name?
BRYNN: Once again it´s a case of twisted like minds. Bill also understands that it´s just fucking boring to see a band on stage looking like they don't want to be there. So it only makes sense that we would see things in the same way, with very red eyes.

KR: The songs are mostly written by Brynn Arens but are there any favorite songwriter you would love to work with?
BRYNN: Yeah,Dave Grohl,I would love to rock with him,I guess that would make it Rock and Grohl!!

KR: You got yourselves a new Flipphead fan. Keep rocking and thank you for putting a big smile on my face!
BRYNN: Rock and roll forever
