FLIPP
Volume

Flipp… You might recall seeing frontman Brynn Arens’ blurred out bum on MTV News back in ’01. Flipp played the very first Edgefest rock festival in Canada and Arens decided to moon the audience… no big deal. Audience members then retaliated by flinging mud at his ass. What else can you expect from a band whose members have monikers such as Schizo-Boy, Kilo Bale, Chia Karaoke Arens, and Freaky Useless? Well… you can expect them to dump half a ton of Flipp cereal onto audience members in Chicago. You can also expect them to hire N’**** (Sorry, I can’t bring myself to type out the rest of the name of that ever popular bubblegum group) look alikes, and proceeded to beat the crap out of them on stage. Some people still believe that N’ you know who really got their asses kicked by Flipp!

So, you ask, what kind of music can one expect from a band such as Flipp? Pure, unadulterated rock and roll. To back up a bit, in 1996 they won a nationwide MTV "unsigned" band contest. MTV staffers and Rob Zombie chose Flipp’s video of "My Generation"(The Who) from thousands of others. They were flown to Detroit to open a concert featuring The Ramones, The Misfits, and White Zombie. That led to national airplay of their video, most of the time featured on MTV’s 120 Minutes. This all happened before they signed their major label deal with Hollywood Records. Their song "I Don’t Care", off their self titled debut album, appeared in the Kevin Smith- Gen. X classic- "Chasing Amy". Flipp played at the 1999 Woodstock Festival in Rome, NY, and was a smashing success. Figuratively speaking… we all know the smashing came later. In 2001 the band began touring the nation with Everclear. Art Alexakis, the Everclear frontman recently started his own record label, Popularity Records. Flipp became Popularity’s first signers. Alexakis and Brynn co-produced the new album Volume, which features the single "Freak". Volume hit stores on August 13th.

To tell you what Flipp is about musically, look at the titles of three of the songs off Volume. "I Still Love Rock and Roll", "Rock and Roll Star", and "Cock Rock". Pretty plain and simple. Rock and Roll as it’s meant to be… Loud guitars, heavy drums, and great bass work is all blended melodically with catchy lyrics that make this whole album fast paced and excellent to listen to. The lyrics to "Freak" drill themselves into your head "I don’t want to be like everyone else, that’s why they call me a freak". You can hear Alexakis’ influence on "I Still Love Rock and Roll". All in all it seems that Flipp really knows their stuff when it comes to good rock music. Check ‘em out.
