Flipp joins lineup for Everclear show.

Upstart pop rock band Flipp has been added to the bill as special guests for the Everclear concert scheduled for tonight at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center.

Flipp is the bizarre brainchild of singer Brynn Arens and was added to the tour after Everclear singer Art Alexis and bassist Craig Montoya caught the video for Rockstar, the high-voltage first single off the Minneapolis-based band's new album.

"They have so much fun playing rock and roll, and I think that's the right kind of attitude to have," Alexis said.

"We're a very visual band as much as a rock band," Arens told the Daily Citizen during a telephone interview conducted between shows from the band's tour bus.

"It wasn't much of a stretch for us to roll the camera and get our act on video," he said.

The group's sound can be described as swaggering glam-rock power pop that incorporates elements of such enduring hard rock icons as Kiss, Mott the Hoople, the Sex Pistols and Cheap Trick.

"Our stuff isn't preconceived. We basically suck down a few beers, turn our amps up to 10 and rock out," Arens said.

The band has made it's mission to out the fun band in rock and roll. Group members' over-the-top stage antics have gained them considerable notoriety.

Past concert stunts include dropping a ton of breakfast cereal from a helicopter on the crowd in Chicago, and a 1997 Tax Day concert to promote the band's debut album outside the downtown Minneapolis Post office which got so far out of hand that the police shut the band down.

"Sitting around doing nothing is harder for us than it is to give our fans the best show they've ever seen," Arens explains.

Singer Arens is joined in Flipp by his multi-instrumentalist brother Chia Karaoke Arens, bass player Freaky Useless and drummer Kilo Bale. The band is managed by show business legend and former Kiss manager Bill Aucoin.

Between the Kabuki-influenced face make-up, bombastic stage show and association with Aucoin, comparisons to Kiss are inevitable.

"We grew up with and are big fans of Kiss, and there's certainly some similarities, but mostly I'd say we stand out as ourselves," Arens said.

Flipp will join The Mayfielf Four and American Hi-Fi as part of the concert when it takes stage to open for Everclear.

Tickets are $29 and are available from the trade center box office or by telephone at 272-7676.
