FLIPP, ''Blow It Out Your Ass'' (Rock Steady/Boxov) Rock foursome Flipp may have missed their shot at stardom when they were let go by Hollywood Records, but they are still thinking big. Their second album is a highly professional blast of headphone music for headbangers, with huge hooks, energy to burn and uncommon attention to multi-track detail. Their frisky meld of glam, punk and arena-rock feels like like they're cramming the 100 Greatest Rock Albums into one relentless CD. Fearless leader Brynn Arens has a fertile mind, and a healthy love-hate relationship with rock 'n' roll stardom (''Rockstar,'' ''Hair Do''). His pose as a rubber-room escapee is more playful than palpable, leading to a world where anything goes, but nothing makes a lot of sense. Meaning that Flipp is psychologically in tune with today's audience, even if their music is from a glorious bygone era. Flipp headlines the Teenage Rampage band contest at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Quest in Minneapolis. |
