Teenage Rampage Just as this early-evening blowout remains open to all ages while serving alcohol to those with ID, Flipp's rock 'n' roll program can be taken as high irony, low juvenilia, or anything you like in between. The band's young fans are so fervent, they've successfully lobbied 93X to play the self-fulfilling hit "Rockstar," and it sounds neither out of place nor like anything else in balls-rock currency these days. Indie kids merely play at putting "the cock in your rock"; rap-metal kids assume it was there all along. But Flipp, who are not kids at all, remain the only group I know of who sing like they're still fighting-mad at mopey grunge for ruining Poison's party. They explicitly celebrate furry-dice rock while engaged in the act of making it---like a lover who exclaims. "I just came, and I plan to yet again!" As per custom with this annual event, two high school bands have been chosen as contest winners to play this concert, and one will headline. Openers include the buzzing Sixties pop of Faux Jean (a retooled Spring Collection), the hard rock of With, and Sunset Black. All ages. $8. 3:00 p.m. The Quest, 110 N. Fifth St., Mpls. |
