X FEST 2001 | Sam

Today is black sunday. And I don't just say that because of the fact that every band playing at the final day of X-fest sounds like a death metal band. It's black sunday because it's going to be an entire year before Flipp plays at the crap-fest again. However, in that year, the memories will get me through those rainy days. The memories and Kilo's drum stick.

Friday kicked ass, surprisingly enough. In a Fred Durst showcase lineup, only Puddle of Mud was dissapointing. Cold was pretty cool, and Staind was very cool. The only extremely crappy band the whole day was Black Flood Diesel. But their crapiness more than made up for everyone else (how the hell did those losers beat With. in the contest?). Of course, I wasn't really thinking about the bands much. I was anticipating saturday.

Saturday started out worse than friday. I walked around with my crew of underage (but not as underage as they look) poon-hounds looking for women who responded to the "Flash Us" t-shirt. Then we watched a few crappy bands. I can't really remember much other than Spineshank and Systematic, but they both sucked. Spacehog was pretty decent, but the crowd couldn't have cared less because they were all too busy showing off their mullets and Minnesotan accents. But, when all seems hopless, there is Flipp.

And oh, how there was Flipp. They opened with She Cloned Me, and the audience was into a band for the first time all day. They went on to play Cock Rock, I Don't Care, I Wish I Was a Planet, Half a Brain, Rockstar, and Hairdo (did I miss any?). The crowd was actually a little lame for X-fest. There wasn't a pit for most of it, other than the drunk guys wrestling in the mud, and no one was crushing us. The best part of the show came when a plane attempted to drop BIOYA underwear on us. It missed, but it was still cool. Some other sweet parts were the ceremonial playing of Leaving on a Jet Plane and beating up the fan, who has the same name as I do but was uglier. However, there was a hovering cloud of despair after I realized that there would be no feathers in the audience. There was a pretty big mud fight near the end of Flipp's set, and I got pelted about four times. Oh yeah, and there were plently of titties. Some were nice looking, some not so nice, some just plain nasty. But there sure were titties. At the end of the show, Kilo threw his drum sticks and I got one. I had a fight a guy twice my age for it, but he saw the puppy dog look in my eyes and was kind enough to not steal it from me.

After Flipp's set, we just kind of walked around. While Kitty played, we saw
two chicks wrestle in the mud topless and make out for a bag of beads. Now that rocked. Buckcherry was pretty good, and so was Run DMC. Overall, X-fest rocked pretty hard. And I will never forget how bad Black Flood Diesel was.
