Fan Section Concert Review
Teenage Rampage 2001 | Mike R

There are few things I look forward to in the middle of a midwestern winter more than Christmas and the annual Teenage Rampage -- an all ages party thrown by Flipp to highlight local music. Every year Flipp holds a contest for local high school bands. The two winning bands get to open the show and close it, and a few other local bands are thrown in for good measure. So early on Saturday morning, my friends Bryan and PJ headed down to Minneapolis from Fargo for the concert. It was to be my seventh Flipp show and their first.

We arrived at the Quest just in time. Shortly after we arrived I bought a cool new Flipp shirt and we watched the first high school band, Maxximum Kapacity, open the show. They were surprisingly good. They opened with a punk version of the Celin Dion song from the Titanic soundtrack. The lead singer couldn't have been more than 15 years old but he had a good voice. The crowd was very impressed.

Next was Sunset Black and they were also pretty good. I liked them too. Next came With. They were alright although I was not as in to them as I was the others. Faux Jean came on next and they were awesome! They were a nice change from the hardcore flavor of the previous bands. The lead singer had this old beat up acoustic guitar and he was getting some cool distortion from it. They also had a backup female vocalist and some keyboards which added nicely to their tunes. After Faux Jean it was time for the main act: Flipp!

The crew had us move back a few feet and then they proceeded to put a huge black curtain up in front of the stage, making it impossible to see anything. After a 30 minute wait, the house music died down and the familiar themes of Star Trek, Star Wars, and other science fiction classics began playing over the PA system. And then Brynn's trademark greeting, "Hello all you crazy, sick, f**kers!" and followed it with Flipp's trademark opener, "Clone Me". A number of songs from the new album, "Blow it Out Your Ass" followed in rapid succession.

Throughout the whole show, there were a lot of crowd surfers and stage divers, which made things quite painful for those of us in the front row. At one point even Brynn got a little mad, and threw some guy back into the crowd by the hair. He deserved it though. Crowd surfing and stage diving once or even twice is fine, but seeing the same bunch of people on stage time and time again gets a little tiring. But it is cool that Flipp even allows people to do that. I don't remember the last time a fan got on stage at a rock concert and wasn't shoved around by security or escorted to the back, or thrown out. I commend Flipp for their leniency. Flipp seems a lot more trusting of their fans than most bands. They don't hesitate to let fans play their instruments, hop around on stage, or sing. That's probably why I'm such a big fan of this crazy band.

The band was very entertaining throughout the entire show. Chia was hopping around the stage with his usual crazy antics and cereal chomping. Freaky was his usual spaceman self, sporting a red mohawk and the jetpack. Brynn made many humorous comments throughout the show, and stated, much to the crowds delight, that this was his favorite concert of the year and "there is some kick ass rock and roll in this town". The band interuppted "Hairdo" to play a long lost song called "Slag" from the previous album, and "Leaving on a Jet Plane" which got the crowd singing along beautifully.

During "Half a Brain" Brynn let a lucky fan on stage to play his guitar; Flipp doused the place with feathers and then they bowed to the crowd and made their exit. The house music started again but the chants of "Flipp! Flipp! Flipp" drowned it out. After a few more minutes the band came back on stage for an encore. I was expecting to hear "Times of My Life" as the closer but they played a song called "Mosh" instead which was even better because I had never heard this particular song before. It whipped the crowd into a moshing frenzy, and at the song's conclusion the band bowed once again and left the stage.

It was a typical Flipp show because the typical Flipp show absolutely rocks harder than any other band out there! Flipp still puts on the best show I have ever seen, and I've said it after all of the seven Flipp concerts I have attended.
