Bob's Java Hut Roof Show | Mike R

Arriving at Bob's Java Hut on Lyndale Ave. in Minneapolis we discovered that Flipp was playing in their usual over the top fashion, but this time on the roof of Moxie's hair salon which adjoins Bob's Java Hut. The band had minimal equipment set up on top of the roof and the PA speakers on the sidewalk below. The free show was a celebration of Flipp's new record deal with Art Alexakis's Popularity Records. In fact, even Art himself was on hand for the show. The weather couldn't have been better. Despite the fact that it was November the sun was shining and temperatures were reaching the 60's.

The show started at about 3:20 p.m. when Flipp took the stage (or roof rather). They came out with very little fanfare and without the usual science fiction soundtrack. Of course they opened with "Cloned Me" as they always do. Brynn was having a little trouble with his microphone for almost the whole song so the crowd couldn't hear any of the vocals. By this time a sizeable crowd had gathered on both sides of the street and some were spilling onto Lyndale Ave. Cars passing by could be seen slowing down to crane their necks up at the roof to see what was going on.

Flipp wasn't making much small talk in-between songs. Perhaps they were worried about being shut down by the police (which has been known to happen to Flipp several times in the past). "Cock Rock" and "Rockstar" followed in quick succession. "Hairdo" was stopped in the middle for a quick rendition of "Let it Be" by the Beatles complete with vocals by Freaky and Chia.

For the conclusion of the half hour set, the band played "Leaving on a Jet Plane" with guest guitarist and vocalist Art Alexakis of Everclear. He didn't seem to know the words but managed OK anyway. After the song there was a brief feather fight on the roof and then Brynn's trademark closing comment: "Thanks for having us!" and the show was over.

The only disappointing thing about the show was it's length. It was just barely 30 minutes long. But still, a little Flipp is better than none at all, as everyone at the show would attest to.
